E-mail forwarding lets you receive messages sent to info@yourdomain.com in the mailbox you already use, without a separate mail server.
How forwarding works
When someone writes to your domain address, the mail server of the domain receives the message and passes a copy to another address. You can forward one address to one or several recipients.
Requirements
- The MX records of the domain must point to the server that performs the forwarding.
- Your hosting or registrar must provide a forwarding or mail service.
Setup steps
- Open the domain or e-mail section of your client area or control panel.
- Create the forwarder: enter the address on your domain and the destination address.
- Check that the MX records point to the correct mail servers.
- Send a test message from another account and confirm that it arrives.
Replying from your domain
Forwarding only receives mail. To send messages as info@yourdomain.com from a free mailbox, add the address as an alias in the mailbox settings and use an SMTP server that allows the domain. Without a proper SPF record, replies may be marked as spam.
Limits and risks
- Forwarded mail can lose its authentication, so some messages end up in spam.
- A catch-all forwarder collects a lot of unwanted mail.
- If the destination mailbox is full, messages bounce.
When to choose a real mailbox
For a company, a full mailbox with its own storage, shared calendars and better deliverability is a more professional solution.
