Virtual dedicated servers (VPS / VDS)

A virtual dedicated server assumes that a physical server is divided into several virtual servers, each of which is completely isolated from the others, has its own operating system and can be rebooted independently of other servers. What is the difference between VDS and VPS? Nothing, these two acronyms mean the same thing. VDS from English. - virtual dedicated server, and VPS - virtual private server. Dedicated and private can be thought of as synonymous words. Each virtual server shares the resources of the physical server with each other, but at the same time they are separate from each other.

If there are any problems on one VPS-server or it consumes too many resources, then this will not affect other VPSs located on the same physical medium. The VPS service is, as it were, intermediate between virtual hosting and a full-fledged dedicated server.

There are many positive aspects of choosing a VPS server: it is much cheaper than a fully dedicated server, but it has almost the same capabilities; gives you more freedom and flexibility compared to the limits and restrictions of shared hosting. If we compare VPS with shared hosting, then on the latter you have extremely limited administrative rights and cannot determine the software configuration. VPS capabilities include performing any actions from your control panel and you do not need to contact technical support every time you need to update or configure something.

With a VPS, you are only limited by the capabilities of the server you choose, so choose a powerful enough one for the needs of your website. If you think you do not have the necessary technical knowledge, then many hosting providers provide a full administration service for your VPS for an additional fee. For different hosting providers, the set of services included in basic administration (that is, the one that is already included in the price of the VPS itself) and in full administration (for an additional fee) may differ. A VPS server with full administration will allow you to manage your server with the same ease as a shared hosting. Yes, in this case you will not have root (admin) access to the server, but you will still be making decisions about the functioning of the server.

Also, if you do not need the help of a hosting provider on an ongoing basis, you can use the “system administration on demand” service, the cost of which is determined hourly or per minute.

A VPS server is an ideal value for money solution for most large sites, as well as web projects that require operating system customization.

It is important to note that unlike shared hosting, you will not get a graphical control panel like cPanel by default. Hosting management is carried out using SSH, or you can install the control panel yourself.

The functional part of a virtual dedicated server in most cases is practically in no way inferior to real servers. Full root access allows you to install any add-ons and fine-tune the server configuration to suit your needs.

What you need a VPS for: for large web projects that require setting up the operating system and independently defining various software configurations.

Advantages:

  • unlimited administrator rights and root access;
  • the ability to define software configuration;
  • independence from other users located on the same physical machine;
  • dedicated resources of the virtual server.

Disadvantages:

  • the price is higher than for shared hosting;
  • difficulties in administration in the absence of the necessary knowledge.
