What is the difference between hosting and a domain? Print

  • domain, domain name
  • 75

Every server connected to the internet has its own IP address. An IP address is a numerical identifier consisting of four numbers between 0 and 255, separated by dots — for example, 203.120.55.77. This format allows computers to locate and communicate with each other efficiently. Since numbers are inconvenient for people to remember, domain names were created as readable labels that correspond to IP addresses. A domain name is simply a word that points to a server on the internet. For instance, the domain myexample-site.net leads to the server with the IP address 203.120.55.77, which hosts the website.

You can think of a domain name like a company sign on a building. The sign helps people find the company. If the company moves to a new building, the sign can be taken down and placed on the new location so that customers still know where to find it.
